The late Mary Gakiru was born on 6th February 1939 in Kibatone village,  Gaturi Sub-location, Abogeta division, Meru County to the late  Miriri Kagere and Jennifer Riara. She was the 2nd born among five siblings namely Eunice Ncurubi, The late Joseph Kinyua, Francis Mugambi, and Maritha Wanja.

She was the beloved wife of Faustino M’Arithi who she met in 1952. One year later, M’Arithi joined the Mau Mau freedom fighters. He lived in the forest for 5 years away from his new love. Mary never lost hope, she patiently waited for her husband. They connected again in 1958 and love blossomed from where they had left, this time more gelled never to let go. They got married in 1958.

Their union was blessed with 9 Children namely; John Gitonga, Joseph Kaburu, Julius Muriungi, Charity Igoki, the late Jane Karimi, Ann Kinanu, James Ikunda, Eunice Makena, and Stella Kathure.

The late Mary started her early education in Gaturi Primary School in 1945 where she schooled for 3 years up to class 3. She then joined Igandene school in 1948 where she did her standard 4 and 5. She prematurely dropped out of school because of lack of school fees.

When Mary started her formal education in Gaturi, she voluntarily joined the Catholic Faith catechism. She completed her catechism and was baptized on 22nd December 1949 and received the holy communion on the same day. She was confirmed on 17th May 1950.

On Tuesday 17th November 2020, she developed health complications and was rushed to St. Anne Igoji Hospital in Meru. She was diagnosed with Pneumonia and was admitted to the Hospital for treatment. As a family, we are glad and happy that on Wednesday 18th November 2020, by the personal initiative and the effort of her husband, she received her last rights and received the sacrament of the anointing of the sick and the Holy Communion.

On Monday 23rd November 2020, she was discharged and was to continue with medication while at home.

However, on the morning of Tuesday 24th November 2020, she developed general body weakness and passed on as she was being rushed back to the hospital after ceaseless bedside Prayers the previous night by her loving husband.
