Mzee Pius Njagi fondly known as Kamunyi wa Juma rested on the night of 15th January 2021, after a long battle with Prostate Cancer.

The late Pius Njagi Kariuki (Kamunyi Wa Juma) was born in Kabari sub-location, Ngariama Location, Kirinyaga County in the year 1932.

He was son to the Late Francis Kariuki (Juma) and Late Jacinta Gaturi Kamunyi and Son-in-law to the Late Muchira Kiura & the Late Margaret Wanjiku Kiura.

Mzee Njagi was a brother to the late Njeru Kariuki, late Tarasila Karimi, Alabina Wawira and Sicily Wambui.

Work

The late Pius worked in a coffee estate, called Kanugi, in Kiambu in the late ’50s and was dearly loved by the employer because of his diligence and was often awarded and got a promotion from time to time.

In 1973, he moved to Kibai in Ngariama location where he applied the experience and expertise gained at the coffee estate to start his own coffee, tea, and livestock farming that he ran successfully.

He excelled in farming and later on ventured into the Matatu business, becoming one of the few successful businessmen in the community. His vehicles nicknamed Mumbi 1, 2, and 3, plied Githure-Kutus-Muranga-Kitui-Ishiara routes and were popular with commuters. To many, the matatus were the only link between surrounding major trading centers and the village. He also ran a shop in Githure from the early ’80s till 2010.

Marriage

The late Pius Njagi married his beloved wife Sicily Muthoni in 1961 and solemnized their marriage in 1965. They were blessed with 9 children: Jacinta Gaturi Kinyua, Margaret Wanjiku Njue, Francis Kariuki Njagi, Rosemary Karimi Kipkorir, Peter Mwaniki Njagi, Simon Gachoki Njagi, Ancent Wambura Sipeto, Morris Muriithi Njagi, and Francis Kariuki Juma. He was father-in-law to Paul Kinyua Gakiavi, Evans Njue Gachoka, Anne Njeri Kariuki, Raymond Kipkorir, Hilda Nyokabi, Florida Mukwanjeru, Moses Sipeto, and Eunice Wanjiru.

He had 27 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Church

The late Pius Njagi was baptized and confirmed in Kiandumu Catholic Church in 1958 and was a practicing Catholic until the late 90’s when he joined Glory of God church where he has been a member until his demise.

Sickness

The late Pius Njagi enjoyed good health until 2017 when he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. He has been receiving treatment in various hospitals including MESU Centre, Nairobi, Agha Khan Nairobi, M.P. Shah (HCG CCK Cancer Centre), Consolata Kyeni as well as in Runyenjes General Hospital from November 2020, he was receiving home-based palliative care and on 15th January, he went to be with the Lord at 10 pm.

He passed away at the age of 88.

Family and friends are meeting at his home in Kibai Village, Rung’eto Sub-location of Ngariama Location, Kirinyaga County for prayers and funeral arrangements from 5:00 pm daily.

Mzee Pius Njagi will be laid to rest on Friday 22nd January 2021 at his home in Kibai, Rung’eto from 10:00 am.

 

 

Family and friends are meeting at his home in Kibai Village, Rung’eto Sub-location of Ngariama Location, Kirinyaga County for prayers and funeral arrangements from 5:00 pm daily.
Mzee Pius Njagi will be laid to rest on Friday 22nd January 2021 at his home in Kibai, Rung’eto from 10:00 am. For coordination purposes, a central committee has been put in place at his home. Other sub-committees are holding meetings in Runyenjes, Kitale, and Thika.
